Foundation Year studies at UPNG and elsewhere. Students must complete 8 semester courses concentrating on either arts or science. The courses are as follows: Arts students must choose 4 of the following: Science students must do all of the following: Students will be advised to enrol in English and Mathematics before attempting other subjects. Mathematics 1 is a prerequisite for Mathematics 2. English 1 is a prerequisite for English 2. Students may be exempted from doing a course if they pass an exemption test in that course with a grade of 'C' or better. The grade achieved on the examination will be used to determine a grade for calculating 'matriculation points'. In order to matriculate, students must complete 8 semester courses with no more that 2 'E' grades. No 'F' grades allowed. Students must pass English 1 and 2 and Mathematics 1 with a 'D' grade or better. Students receiving an 'E' or an 'F' grade in Mathematics 1 or English 1 will be required to do a remedial course in the appropriate subject before repeating or moving onto other courses. Students who receive 2 withdrawal marks (W) or 2 non-completion marks (UF) of 2 'F' grades (or any combination of these 3 marks) in 2 consecutive semesters will be required to show cause as to why they should not be excluded for 2 semesters. Entrance qualifications: Applicants must have completed grade ten (10) or meet provisional admission criteria. Students may be required to demonstrate their proficiency in English and Mathematics by sitting a qualifying examination. An applicant who has not completed Grade 10, but passes a qualifying examination in Mathematics and English, may be admitted to Matriculation studies. | |||||||||||||||||||
